Barcelona has been a frontrunner in creating more inclusive and more liveable urban spaces in the past decades. Barcelona’s approach to citizen involvement and municipal innovation has been influencing cities all across the world. The Barcelona Green Deal 2030 has been identified as a significant source of inspiration for the Budapest Municipality. Barcelona’s Chief Architect Office has an essential role in Barcelona’s changing mobility and public spaces, ranging from Superblocks to post-Covid recovery. KÉK, in cooperation with the Cervantes Institute Budapest and Eutropian invited Barcelona Chief Architect Office Xavier Matilla and Deputy Chief Architect Sílvia Casorrán to share their experiences about Barcelona’s public space innovation and reforms.

The event consists of two parts:

19h Making the city public - Learning from Barcelona

Xavier Matilla, Barcelona Chief Architect, and Sílvia Casorrán Martos, Deputy Chief Architect share their experiences, insights, and recommendations in a public lecture, focusing on public space and mobility innovation, and the role of public-civic cooperation and citizen participation in the transformations of the city. The lecture will explore new Barcelona initiatives including the Superblocks, on the city’s ambitious tactical urbanism program to protect school environments, the new greening projects and further measures to improve the living and climate conditions in Barcelona.

20h Ada for Mayor (Alcaldessa, 2016) with English subtitles

The film follows Ada Colau on her frenetic one-year journey from activism to institutional politics as the current mayor of Barcelona. The intimate chronicle, featuring Colau’s video diary and the privileged access to the inner-workings of a new citizen political platform, reveals an extraordinary journey in which two universal themes are united: the David versus Goliath combat, illustrative of the political changes taking place in southern Europe, and the inner struggle of someone who fears to become what she has so often questioned.

The event is in English, open to the public, and free of charge. Vaccination certificate is mandatory. The number of seats for the event are limited, we accept visitors in order of arrival.
